Definitions of Industries in the non-manufacturing Sector (trading and other services) -=:>

  • " Large industries " - means an industry in which more than 100 workers work .
  • " Medium Industries " - means an industry in which max 50 workers work.Net asset (except land and building) =$70000 to $1.5 crore
  • " small industries " means an industry in which fewer than 25 workers(unlike family members in a cottage industry) . Net asset(except land building) =$700 to $70000 Dollars

Contribution of SME in National Economy per year :-

  1. Total employment :-nearly 31 million , equivalent to 40% of the population of age who are 15 years above (In total population 15+=75 million
  2. Contribution to household income in both urban and rural areas : 75%
  3. The industrial structure of SMEs :-
  • Wholesale and retail trade and repairs : 40%
  • Production and sale of agricultural goods : 22%
  • Services : 15% and
  • Manufacture : 14%
  1. GDP contribution by SMEs : BDT 750 billion or nearly 25% of the total GDP (BDT 2996 billion)
N.B (total population of Bangladesh = 150 million)
(total Population (15+ years is = 75 million ,50%)


Services Industries :-


  1. Hospitals and Clinics
  2. It - based activities
  3. Telecommunication
  4. Transport and communication
  5. Construction Business
  6. Entertainment
  7. Photography
  8. Hotel and tourism
  9. Warehouse and Container services
  10. Printing and packaging
  11. Cold storage
  12. Horticulture and flower gardening and marketing

Reserved Industries :-

Those industries that are necessary to be kept reserved by the government in the interest of national security and are sensitive have been identified as " reserved industries " .
In the below there are some examples :-
  1. Arms and ammunition's and military equipments production for police and security use
  2. Nuclear power services
  3. Security printing and minting
  4. Afforestation and Mechanized Extraction within the boundary of reserved forest
  5. In some extend -> Kaptai Hydro Power + B.A.E.C.
Note:LES's and Jute Industries do not fall under this category .


Thrust sector :-

The thrust sector contributes to the countries industrialization and poverty alleviation by increasing GDP , creating employment opportunities and increasing export income , special incentives and financial facilities such as tax exemptions , tax holiday , and taxation at a reduced rate can be considered in the sense of starting a industry .

  1. Agro-Based and agro- processing industry
  2. Textiles , RMG(Ready made garments) and jute industry
  3. Computer ,software and ICT and Electronics
  4. Light engineering including automobiles industry
  5. Pharmaceutical goods making industry
  6. Leather and leather products making industry
  7. Ceramics industry
  8. High fashion value added RMG (Ready made garments)
  9. Artificial flower production industry
  10. Frozen foods industry
  11. Jewelery , cosmetics and toiletries service industry
  12. Silkworm and silk industry
  13. Tourism industry
  14. Basic chemicals/raw materials used in industries
  15. Dye and chemicals used in textiles industry
  16. Furniture making industry
  17. Luggage fashion-based goods producing industry
  18. CR coil industry
  19. Handicrafts industry
  20. Herbal medicines industry
  21. Commercial plantation , Horticulture and flower cultivation industry .
